The Lector

The Lector

When the Sacred Scriptures are read in the Church, God himself speaks to his people, and Christ, present in His word, proclaims the Gospel. Therefore, the readings from the Word of God are to be listened to reverently by everyone, for they are an element of the greatest importance in the Liturgy.

The spirit of the parish community will be nourished through the meaningful proclamation of the Word of God. The Lector clearly and understandably proclaims the Word of God to the assembly. Lectors must feel comfortable standing in front of the assembly, have good oral communications skills, and the ability to read effectively. Lectors are expected to attend continuing ministry formations and training sessions.

Who Can Become a Lector?

  •   Fully initiated, active members of a parish.
  •  Be of sufficient age, maturity, and temperament to undertake this ministry.

The Process

  • There is no formal training for one to become a Lector.
  • Each Lector will receive a Lector’s Workbook annually.
  • It is strongly advised that every Lector read and rehearse the readings prior to their assigned Mass.
  • Unexperienced readers should work with the Liturgical Lector Minister to rehearse, learn to project and add interest and substance to the delivery.
